Dear Erik, I read the book ages ago and I remember that these descriptions got me really sick because I was so much into the book, nose stucked between the pages, that I could actually smell it.
Later, once i was in Akko, after the fish market was almost closing and I could smell the fish juices and the blood of other animals, such as goats and the fruits and the nargilas, and the knafe and arabs stincking from a hard day working under the sun, and cardamom and tea and chip perfumes, and falafel, and the sea breeze, etc... made me remember that book.
When I read at basenotes that actually they make scented sessions of this movie, I wonder why?
One doesn´t need it! if you have a nose and a bag full of olfactory experiences, you actually can smell stench!
The book is really great. One of my favorites.
I wonder how Germany smells like...

Brazil is too big, so every place has a different smell.
Sao Paulo smells like polution, sometimes the smell of freshness after a hard rain...frangipanni, orchids, piss...
Bahia smells like dende oil, cloves, cacau, sweat...poverty
Rio smells like pot, sperm, lemmon, fish...cheap perfume
Israel smells wonderful! Rosemarine, sea breeze, grapefruit, oranges, cardamom, tabacco, wild flowers, olibanum, pine, coffee...

tell me about Germany and your town...
